During 2008, Whitsunday Regional Council will be providing free vaccinations for all Year 8, 9 and 10 students, as part of Qld Health’s Statewide School Based Vaccination. These vaccinations are only available in the former Whitsunday Shire Council region, with clinics being conducted at the Proserpine State High School and the Whitsunday Christian College.
The vaccination program includes:
- Free hepatitis B vaccine (two doses given four to six months apart) and free varicella (chickenpox) vaccine for Year 8 students
- Free diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (dTpa) vaccine for Year 10 students
These vaccinations will be conducted by a team of specially trained staff and registered nurse/s. Consent forms should have already been received and completed by students attending Years 8-10 in at the above schools.
Vaccination not only protects individuals, but also others in the community, by increasing the general level of immunity and minimising the spread of infection.
The National Health and Medical Research Council recommends these vaccinations for these age groups in the current National Immunisation Program Schedule.
